In the history of humanity, great achievements are recounted where men fight and die to defend their people, their families, and their ideas. But since there are laudable acts, there are also detestable ones. Trust is something that the human being valued very much, and there is only one act that is capable of completely destroying this: treason.
This is one of the most despicable things, having destroyed kingdoms, families, and alliances. Just as there are heroes, there are also traitors who switched sides to destroy everything the others defended. Of course, who is a traitor and a hero depends on the focus or where you look, but the characters you will see below betrayed their countries, their friends, and the people who trusted them.
5. Ezra Pound
Ezra Pound is one of the most influential poets in American literature of the 20th century. In 1949 he won the Bollingen Prize, curiously, during those years, he was also considered a traitor and held in a military camp in the United States.
How did this happen? Well, Pound wandered around several of the most famous cities in the world until he settled in Italy. Right there, he sympathized with Mussolini’s fascist ideas and publicly supported Hitler .
He also worked for the Italian government producing radio shows that insulted the United States and promoted fascism. Pound was considered a traitor to his homeland, and in 1945 he was captured by the American forces. After nine years since he won the award, Ezra Pound was released and spent the rest of his days in Italy.
4. Robert Ford
Perhaps Ford would never have leaped to the history books pages if he had not shot and killed the notorious gunman and thief, Jesse James. Thanks to this, he earned the repudiation and hatred of society, instead of the fame and recognition he expected.
James was a feared, but well-known criminal, and Ford was just a young man who dreamed of being like him. After working with James on several robberies, Ford gained their trust and became part of the gunman’s group of friends. One day, while James was arranging a painting at his home, Robert Ford shot him in the head from behind. Ford was known to be a coward and a traitor. The hatred for him was so great that one day he was similarly murdered.
3. Benedict Arnold
Benedict Arnold had a difficult life; three of his brothers died of illness, suffered poverty, left school, and had to take care of his alcoholic father. When the time came to improve his life and reputation, he joined the military group ” Sons of Liberty .”
After several victories, he caught the attention of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but his fame was lost when he was wounded in the leg and relegated by the revolutionary generals. So he decided to switch sides and planned to hand West Point over to the English. But his betrayal was discovered before he could carry it out, so he fled with the English and carried out several attacks on the revolutionary army.
Reportedly, on his deathbed in London, he finally regretted his betrayal and asked to be dressed in his ancient nation’s uniform.
2. Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger
“Even you, Brutus?” Shakespeare wrote. Brutus’s family was always against tyrants, and perhaps this was one of the main reasons that prompted him to assassinate Julius Caesar. During the Great Roman Civil War, he was part of the opposition, and Julius Caesar forgave him. But Cassius used it in his conspiracy against Caesar, and with fake letters from society calling for his death, Brutus acted along with other senators in one of the most terrible treasons in history.
1. Guy Fawkes
This character became very famous thanks to V for Vendetta. His face became the symbol of anarchists, but also of revolutionaries and hackers. But who was Guy Fawkes?
Fawkes was an Englishman who converted to Catholicism and fought in the Netherlands against the Dutch Protestants. As a Catholic, he could not tolerate a Protestant king in England. Along with other conspirators, he planned to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I. But his betrayal was uncovered. Fawkes was discovered along with 36 barrels of gunpowder and sentenced to hang and dismemberment, however, he was never executed because he committed suicide.
